  • Year of Completion: 2014

  • Walkway Length: 140 meters

  • Primary Materials: FRP Pultruded Structural Profiles (flat bars, square hollow) & FRP Solid Roofing Sheets

  • Application: Covered pedestrian walkway next to a power substation

  • Objective: To replace steel walkways with a non-conductive, corrosion-resistant FRP solution

In 2014, we successfully installed a 140-meter FRP pedestrian walkway at Taman Jaya LRT Station in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. The project replaced traditional steel walkways, which posed electrical safety hazards near a power substation.

The FRP walkway structure was professionally engineer-approved before installation during civil works. It was constructed using Fiberglass Pultruded Structural Profiles and Fiberglass Roofing Solid Sheets, ensuring strength and durability.

  • The trusses and purlins, made from flat bars and square hollow sections, provide a lightweight yet robust framework, capable of supporting loads over 3 meters per support.

  • The FRP solid sheet roofing features a protective gel coat, ensuring UV resistance and long-lasting aesthetic appeal.

Traditional steel walkways are electrically conductive, posing risks of arc flash and electric shocks. Additionally, exposure to rain and humidity accelerates rusting, increasing maintenance costs.

By contrast, this FRP walkway offers superior safety, durability, and performance, making it an ideal solution for pedestrian infrastructure.

Since its installation in 2014, the FRP pedestrian walkway at Taman Jaya LRT Station has remained in excellent condition with minimal maintenance required. This successful implementation highlights the viability of FRP solutions for infrastructure projects such as:

  • Marine & port infrastructure

  • Bridges & elevated walkways

  • Rural pedestrian walkways (e.g., replacing wooden structures)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why is FRP preferred over steel for pedestrian walkways?

FRP is non-conductive, corrosion-resistant, lightweight, and requires minimal maintenance, making it ideal for walkways near power stations and humid environments.

How does FRP contribute to public infrastructure safety?

FRP eliminates electric shock risks, withstands harsh weather, and provides long-term structural stability without frequent repairs.

What industries benefit most from FRP walkways?

Industries such as transportation, marine, chemical processing, and power plants benefit from FRP’s durability and safety features.

Is FRP more expensive than steel?

While the initial cost of FRP may be higher than steel, long-term savings from lower maintenance costs, easy installation, and durability make it more cost-effective.
